Margot Brown, the agency’s Vice President of Media, is retiring after 45 years at the forefront of the Canadian advertising industry. Margot has worked in major agencies across Canada, including in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Toronto.

“Margot Brown is one of the best things that ever happened to the Canadian media world,” says Drew Cringan, Chair and Senior Partner at MCG. “Margot is competent, flexible, funny and brilliant – the perfect mix. The agency and our clients have benefitted greatly because of her.”

Evolving from the Mad Men era where flirty male bosses were the norm, to more recently, where she has been director and vice president, Margot’s brains, candour, talent and drive are well-known.

“Margot’s understanding of the outdoor and transit industry has proven invaluable over the years, enabling us to become strong media partners with MCG (and McKim Communications before that),” says Joanne Koop, Director of Sales at Pattison Outdoor. “Extremely knowledgeable and approachable, her presence in the advertising industry will be greatly missed.”

The Winnipegger got her start in the industry as a filing clerk in the media department of a Toronto agency in 1967, where she claims the only reason she was hired was because her typing was error-free.

She’s had an illustrious and colourful media career ever since, and last week was honoured with a surprise industry party where she was presented with her very own bus back sign. All guests received a tin of “RetireMints.” On Monday, a similarly-themed ad in the Winnipeg Free Press celebrated Margot’s transition to retirement with, “When office life gets a little stale, reach for RetireMints.”

“I have been extremely lucky to have had such a rich and varied experience over these many years,” Margot says. “There has been a lot of change in that time but most of all I have valued the relationships with reps, clients and fellow staff. In this business you have to work extremely hard just to survive. Success is never about one person being a star – it is always the culmination of a full team effort – an environment in which I have always enjoyed working.”

Margot has mastered the countless transitions in the industry through the decades, and today she is one of the agency’s best experts on the digital revolution. It is a testament to her tenacity and versatility.
